Introduction
Note: REBECCA is registered on the British Ship's Registry as a commercial vessel with MCA Category 2. certification (certification re-issued September 2008.) The vessel is therefore presently exempt from the European Union's Recreational Craft Directive (CE Marking) and VAT. Introduction: Looking at REBECCA, we know it is difficult to believe that she is a

  • new build'. Back in the mid-nineties, her designer, Nat Benjamin, was asked to draw the
  • schooner of his dreams' and an hour later her initial profile was already on paper! Her keel was laid in 1998 at the Gannon & Benjamin Boatyard, Martha's Vineyard, USA, where they have been designing and building traditional wooden yachts and other vessels for some thirty years. Over the next three years, drawing on their wealth of experience and skills, REBECCA gradually took shape, finally being launched in May 2001. She is traditionally constructed with a
  • plank on frame' hull and laid deck, using mainly Silver Bali and Angelique, woods chosen for their strength and durability from sustainable forests in Suriname. Her masts are hollow Sitka spruce, whilst her deck beams are English oak. Her concept came from the working American East Coast Schooners but her design was strongly influenced by John Alden and L. Francis Herreshoff, two well-known twentieth century naval architects. Her fine lines suggested she was destined to be a classic yacht and although not originally intended to race, she has already won trophies in the US and the British Virgin Islands as well as the prestigious Aschanti of Saba Trophy in the Antigua Classics, 2002. Wooden Boats - In Pursuit of the Perfect Craft at an American Boatyard By Michael Ruhlman In 1995, in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, a boat-struck man answered a question posed by a boat-builder. It may have been one of the most common of all dialogues between the boatstruck and the boatbuilder, but on this occasion something substantial would be born from it, born of all this, all that wooden boats were and are, all that they attract - this adoration, this reverence, this innate sense of truth, this want, this insanity, this intelligence, this capacity to imagine beauty and draw its design so that it will move through water with grace and power, be drawn through it by wind - a boat born ultimately of a deep knowledge of how wood on water works, knowledge earned over many thousands of miles on the earth's oceans, many decades building boats, and long study of a five-thousand-year-old practice, and born, too, of a sense of all that the boat might be, simply for the boat: what might be. Out of all this came REBECCA. She floated out of a collection unconscious like a ghost ship materializing out of the fog. She was to be the last great plank-on-frame schooner built in the twentieth century: REBECCA. This wooden yacht may have been sparked by a particular form of ecstatic insanity - that of a man boatstruck - but the thing itself was as solid and durable as the hardwoods that would compose her backbone, a deep-water sailing vessel powerful enough to cruise any of the earth's oceans, a beautiful boat, a mighty ship, one that would exalt all who beheld her.

    Comments
Since REBECCA was launched and commissioned in Martha's Vineyard in 2001, she has benefited from having a full-time professional skipper aboard, so has been maintained to a very high standard. Over the years, a number of minor modifications have been made to her original specification, particularly in connection with obtaining full European chartering status and she now carries an extensive range of high specification safety equipment. In her five seasons at sea, REBECCA has cruised in Massachusetts and Maine; extensively in the Caribbean; has crossed the Atlantic and to sail in Ireland, and on the west coast of France and Portugal, passing through the Straits of Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean in 2005. Over the last three years her home port has been Cannes from which base she has visited many parts of the Western Mediterranean, delighting all those - family, friends and charterers - who have sailed on her. She has taken part in a handful of regattas to date, winning the Sweethearts Regatta in the BVI and the Classics Class in Antigua Classics, 2002. She now has a CIM rating for participating in the Mediterranean Regatta circuit. She has proved to be not only versatile and sea kindly when long distance cruising but also wonderfully balanced, with that extra special turn of speed which comes when a yacht has truly classic lines. Broker's Comments
Beautiful, nearly-new, classic wooden schooner in superb skipper-maintained condition, designed and built by Gannon & Benjamin, Martha's Vineyard, USA and launched 2001 - their designs are famous for their speed, seaworthiness, practicality and simplicity. With comfortable accommodation for up to twelve in four cabins, she displays superb craftsmanship both above and below deck. With approximately 1,800 sq ft working sail area and a powerful 178hp Yanmar diesel engine, she will always be a fast yacht, regardless of how the wind blows. Conceived as his 'dream yacht' by the designer, to combine blue water cruising with classic racing, she is now fully MCA certified for charter and carries CIM rating. Winner of the Classics Class at Antigua Classics 2002 and of the 'je ne sais quoi' award at the BCYC Regatta in Cowes 2004, she definitely has that WOW! Factor. A joy to own and a delight to sail.
